Apple May Unveil Foldable iPhone in 2026 [Report]

Apple is working on a foldable iPhone design that could be unveiled as early as 2026, according to a new report from the WSJ. When unfolded the device would have a display larger than the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Sources indicate that Apple is developing a foldable iPhone alongside a larger foldable device featuring a display approximately 19 inches in size. This aligns with multiple earlier rumors, including one from Mark Gurman today, describing it as a giant iPad-like foldable device.

Both foldable designs have been in development for years, but some key parts weren't ready. Major challenges included improving the hinge, a mechanism that allows the device to fold and unfold, and the display cover, a flexible material protecting the foldable screen.


Apple has experimented with various designs for the device, including one with the display on the outside when folded. However, sources say the company now favors an inward-folding design.

Initially, the larger model was expected to debut first to gauge market response. Yet it seems the foldable iPhone will be ready first, and some executives are eager to release it immediately.

Apple executives are pushing for a 2026 release, but the company may need another year to address technical challenges, the people said.

Notably, the WSJ is also corroborating reports that Apple plans a new thinner 'iPhone Air' for release next year. The slim model is purportedly targeted at consumers who like a sleek-looking device and don't mind giving up some Pro model features.
