Apple is planning to launch a new 'Passwords' app for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, according to Bloomberg. The app will rival offerings from 1Password, LastPass, and Proton, making it easier for Apple users to save and use complex passwords for websites and software.
The company is planning the new app as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15, the next major versions of its iPhone, iPad and Mac operating systems, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the initiative hasn't been announced. The software, which can generate passwords and keep track of them, will be unveiled June 10 at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference.
The new Passwords app will be powered by iCloud Keychain, the password management system currently used by Apple to sync passwords and account information between devices. While iCloud Keychain can already function as a basic password manager, it's hidden in the Settings app and can be a bit cumbersome to use.
The dedicated app Passwords app will purportedly allow users to import passwords from other services and will work on Vision Pro and Windows computers. It's said to support verification codes and serve as an authenticator app, similar to Google Authenticator.
The app features a list of user logins and splits details into different categories, such as accounts, Wi-Fi networks and Passkeys, an Apple-promoted password replacement that relies on Face ID and Touch ID. Like most password managers, the data can be auto-filled into websites and apps when a user goes to log in.
Apple will unveil iOS 18 and macOS 15 during the WWDC 2024 keynote on June 10. Please download the iClarified app or follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and RSS for full coverage of the event!
