Apple has placed an order for capacitive button components that will be used for the iPhone 16, according to a new report from UDN.
Last year, numerous rumors suggested that Apple had planned to introduce capacitive buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro; however, the company changed its plans before launch.
Now, it appears that Apple has actually placed an order with ASE Technology Holding for a System-in-Package (SiP) module for the new capacitive button system on both sides of the iPhone 16. To provide haptic feedback when buttons are pressed, it's said that two Taptic Engines will also be added.
Due to Apple's new design and order requirements, ASE Technology Holding's Kaohsiung factory is expanding its production capacity, with mass shipments expected to begin in the third quarter. As the capacitive buttons are part of Apple's brand-new design and application, ASE Technology Holding has exclusively received all the related new SiP module orders, providing fresh momentum for their operations. With Apple's new devices expected to ship in the hundreds of millions annually, the volume of capacitive buttons prepared is anticipated to be substantial.
Based on the report, it's unclear if Apple will bring capactive buttons to all four iPhone 16 models, or just the Pro models. Apple typically releases its new iPhone models in September. If capacitive buttons are indeed making an appearance this year, we'll likely see more leaks in the upcoming months.
