Apple to Use BRS Technology to Reduce Bezel Size on iPhone 16 [Report]

Apple will use new BRS (Border Reduction Structure) technology to reduce the bezel size on its next generation iPhone 16 models, according to a new report from sisajournal-e. BRS is a borderless display technology that makes the border at the bottom of the panel as thin as possible by rolling the copper wiring at the bottom upwards.

A display industry insider tells the site, "There has been an effort to reduce the bezels on all four sides of smartphones, but it has been difficult to significantly reduce the bottom bezel. In fact, borderless technology that reduces the bottom bezel has been applied to some other companies' products before, but there were issues with heating. Recently, with improvements in heat control technologies, it seems to be reapplied."

Apple's display suppliers, including Samsung, LG, and BOE, have already secured the technology and are expected to use it for all four incoming iPhone models. Notably, the site believes the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will keep the same displays as the iPhone 15; however, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max could see slightly larger displays. Leaks from last year were already predicting a 6.31-inch display for the iPhone 16 Pro and a 6.91-inch display for the iPhone 16 Pro Max.


Finally, Apple's efforts to move the front facing camera under the display have allegedly been delayed.

Minsoo Kang, a senior researcher at Omdia, says, "Apple wants to change the shape of the display again by hiding the camera or Face ID behind the display, but the UDC technology is being delayed. It was originally planned for release this year but has been postponed to next year, and now it may be delayed until 2026 or even beyond 2027."
