Apple is working on a new AI tool for developers that will rival Github's Copilot, according to a report from Bloomberg. The tool has been in development for the past year and will purportedly be available inside the next major version of Xcode.
The new system will operate similarly to Microsoft's GitHub Copilot and use artificial intelligence to predict and complete blocks of code, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans are private. That simplifies the programming process for software development, potentially saving time and money.
Apple has expanded internal testing of the programming tool ahead of a possible unveiling at WWDC 2024. The move is part of a broader push into AI as Apple CEO Tim Cook announced during a recent company earnings call.
Craig Federighi, Apple's SVP of Software Engineering, has allegedly told his teams to develop as many new AI features as possible for this year's software updates, and made VP of Software Sebastien Marineau-Mes the AI point person. Xcode work is being overseen by VP of Software Engineering Andreas Wendker.
The new versions of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, codenamed Crystal, are expected to introduce a slew of new AI features. Likewise, Apple will also add some AI features to the next version of macOS, codenamed Glow. Possible AI capabilities include the creation of personalized Apple Music playlists, the creation of Keynote slideshows, and a revamped version of Spotlight. The new version may be able to answer complex questions based on training from large language models (LLMs) and integrate deeper with apps to launch specific functions.
Of course, Apple is also working on AI that can improve Siri, customer support, and health features. Please download the iClarified app or follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and RSS for more updates!
