Apple 15-inch M2 MacBook Air Review Roundup [Video]

Apple has lifted the embargo on reviews of its new 15-inch M2 MacBook Air.

The larger version of its most popular notebook features a 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display, a silent fanless design, an M2 chip, up to 18 hours of battery life, an all-new six-speaker sound system, a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, and MagSafe charging.

The 15-inch MacBook Air starts at $1299 and is available in Starlight, Space Gray, Midnight, and Silver. Currently, Amazon has the laptop on sale for $49.01 off.

I am glad to be on the laptop beat today. Not because this MacBook is ushering in a new era for humanity but because real, regular people — sitting on their couches, checking their emails, bookmarking their recipes, whatever it is we all do — are going to be happy with this device. It's everything you'd want from a MacBook Air. And it will help them do their work and check their emails and watch Netflix faster and better. Good laptops make us better versions of ourselves. That is all they should be doing.

My advice when buying a MacBook in 2023 is fairly simple. If this is your work machine, and you do a lot of resource-intensive tasks, get a Pro. Ditto for those who are more serious about gaming. For a vast majority of users, the Air is a great device, and the 13-inch is plenty sufficient for most tasks – especially if you travel a lot. If you're shopping for a system that will mostly live on a desk at home or in the office, the 15-inch is a great choice.

All in all, the 15-inch MacBook Air is one of the first laptops from Apple since the M-series transition to be priced aggressively, and represents a great option for people who want a daily use laptop. It should be particularly attractive to people who haven't recently upgraded.

I wish I had more to say about the new 15-inch MacBook Air, but really, the best compliment I can give it is that it's just as great as the 13-inch model I reviewed last summer. I liked that laptop so much that I bought one for myself. Now Apple sells that same computer but with a 15.3-inch display. If you've hesitated to consider buying a MacBook Air because its screens always seemed a bit too cramped, you now have another option. If you've always wanted a bigger display but didn't want to pay more than $1000 for the privilege, your time is now.

But either way, these laptops are over $1,000 less than the 16-inch-screen MacBook Pro. These are the easiest way to get a great larger-screened MacBook now, and they're worth it. One note: the 15 now has a year-old M2 processor. Apple's M2 was only a moderate increase in performance over the breakthrough advance of the M1 before it when it arrived last summer. Will a future M3 take another leap? Maybe you shouldn't worry. Apple's speed gains on the M-series chips over the Intel models have been so good that they still feel fantastic.
