GM to Drop Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for Future EVs

GM has announced that it will phase out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support for its electric vehicle infotainment systems, moving to a new built-in system developed with Google, reports Reuters.

In a move that could allow the automaker to capture more data on how customers drive and charge EVs, General Motors will stop offering Carplay and Android Auto starting with the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer. The company plans to phase out combustion light-duty vehicles by 2035.

GM has been working with Google since 2019 to develop the software foundations for infotainment systems that will be more tightly integrated with other vehicle systems such as GM's Super Cruise driver assistant. The automaker is accelerating a strategy for its EVs to be platforms for digital subscription services.

In an interview, Edward Kummer, GM's chief digital officer, and Mike Himche, executive director of digital cockpit experience, said GM would benefit by focusing engineers and investment on one approach that doesn't require a cellphone.

"We have a lot of new driver assistance features coming that are more tightly coupled with navigation," Himche told Reuters. "We don't want to design these features in a way that are dependent on person having a cellphone."

New EV owners will get access to Google Maps and Google Assistant at no cost for eight years. After that access may require a subscription. Additionally, the new system will feature apps from Spotify, Audible, and other similar services.

"We do believe there are subscription revenue opportunities for us," Kummer said. The company hopes to reach subscription revenue of $20 billion to $25 billion by 2030.

The new system will still allow iPhone or Android owners to listen to music or make calls via Bluetooth; however, it's seen as a setback for Apple in its competition with Google. GM had offered more models with CarPlay integration than any other brand.

Key reason for GM doing this: "We do believe there are subscription revenue opportunities for us”. Greedy!
