Apple is Preparing to Launch a New AirTag [Gurman]

Apple is preparing to launch a new AirTag next year, according to a new report from Mark Gurman. In his newsletter to subscribers, Gurman says the new tracking device will offer better range and improved privacy.

Apple gears up to launch a new AirTag four years after the first model. In May, I reported that Apple is working on a new AirTag — code-named B589 — for release around the middle of next year. That accessory has now progressed in manufacturing tests, and Apple is getting ready to bring it to market. I'm told the new version will look similar to the current model, but offer better range, bolster the onboard wireless chip and improve privacy.

To improve security, Apple is apparently working on making it more difficult to remove the speaker from AirTag. The current model uses the speaker, alongside smartphone alerts, to notify users that an unpaired AirTag may be travelling with them. Removing the speaker makes AirTag more useful for tracking stolen items, but it's also a technique that could be used by stalkers.


Gurman notes the new AirTag is one of many new Apple devices coming next year including a new smart home display, iPad Air, entry-level iPad, MacBook Air, Mac Pro, Mac Studio, iPhone SE, and more. If you've yet to try AirTag, the current model is on sale today for just $19, down from $29.
