Google Says Chrome for Mac is Now Faster Than Safari

Google has announced that its Chrome for Mac browser is now faster than Safari.

We go deep on every platform where Chrome runs to provide the fastest possible experience. We’re excited to announce that in M99, Chrome on Mac has achieved the highest score to date of any browser – 300 – in Apple’s Speedometer browser responsiveness benchmark.

Google says it enabled ThinLTO in build M99 of Chrome, a build optimization technique that inlines speed-critical parts of the code base. That resulted in a speed bump that purportedly makes Chrome 7% faster than current builds of Safari. Alongside recent graphics optimizations (pass-through decoder and out-of-process rasterization), the company's tests show Chrome’s graphics performance to be 15% faster than Safari.

Overall, Google says since launching on M1-based Macs in late 2020, Chrome is now 43% faster than before.

We briefly tested Google's claims on a 16-inch M1 Max MacBook Pro. Safari 15.2 scored 275, Chrome 99 scored 305, and Chrome Canary 101 scored 324.

Companies just love to compare themselves to those who are better than them rather than just stand out amongst the crowd as someone who may not be that into Apple. This tactic has made me stay only with Apple and increasingly with them with the only exceptions being they’re not involved with certain markets, but even then wouldn’t give money to companies who have gone so far to mock the intelligence of their fan base.
