Passware Announces $1990 Add-On That Can Crack T2 Mac Passwords

Passware has announced the first forensic tool that can crack passwords of Macs with Apple's T2 security chip.

Passware continues to deliver cutting-edge decryption solutions for the forensic community. We are excited to announce the first forensic tool that recovers passwords for Macs with Apple T2 Security Chips! Passware Kit Forensic T2 Add-on runs on Windows or macOS and requires a connection of the target Mac with a USB-C or Thunderbolt cable during the password recovery process. The tool also needs an image of the target Mac (can be acquired in “Target Disk Mode” using a forensic tool of your choice).

Passware Kit Forensic T2 Add-on is available for law enforcement and other types of government organizations and private companies with justifiable business needs, such as forensic firms or corporate investigation teams. All orders are subject to manual verification. The add-on costs 1990 USD/EUR and includes one year of free updates.

This new capability is possible due to a T2 security vulnerability that allows Passware to bypass lockout detection. This means that users can now run a dictionary attack using known passwords (550,000) or a larger dictionary (10 billion). While the process is slower than usual (15ish per second), the average length six character password can be cracked in around 10 hours.

If you've purchased a new M1 Mac, like the 14-inch MacBook Pro on sale today, this does not affect you.
