Apple Agrees to Pay Up to $500 Million to Settle iPhone Slowdown Lawsuit

Apple has agreed to pay up to $500 million to settle a lawsuit over its secret slowdown of iPhones with degraded batteries, reports Reuters.

The proposed settlement was disclosed on Friday night and requires approval by U.S. District Judge Edward Davila in San Jose, California.

Under terms of the settlement, Apple would pay consumers around $25 per iPhone depending on how many iPhones are eligible. The minimum total payout would be $310 million.

Eligible recipients include U.S. owners of the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7Plus or SE that ran the iOS 10.2.1 or later operating system. Also covered are U.S. owners of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus that ran iOS 11.2 or later before Dec. 21, 2017.

Court papers show that Apple agreed to settle the class action lawsuit to avoid the burden and costs of litigation; however, it's more likely to avoid a finding of guilt and further bad publicity.

Lawyers representing consumers believe the settlement is "fair, reasonable, and adequate" and said damages experts determined that $46 per iPhone was the maximum possible.

500 million is a drop in the bucket. I would rather have a device work slightly slower than shut down all the time. Yes, it would have been nice to tell us but at the same time they were offering the best experience they could on that device with the technology they had. Cheers 1reader

Enjoy $25 (aprox.) from ppl that think that was wrong (like me). Ps. Big chunk from lawsuit probably will go to lawyers, we the little “ants”, probably, will get $25-30. Btw I’ve also got a check of $34 from ATT for similar issue, slowing down unlimited customers without being “transparent” about it (I know you like that word, but nobody is when it comes to money).

Got the same check from att for throttling. I don’t mind as much what Apple did because it made the device work not shut down. Regarding att, that was crap. Oh am we will probably get $0.10 from the Apple lawsuit since there are a lot more Apple customers than att subscribers with Apple phones. Cheers 1reader. Your cool

See PaulieP and “Voice of ...” you don’t have to agree with my thinking but I was right. They were wrong to do that. Hopefully they have learned something.
