Apple is negotiating for a price reduction of the OLED panels supplied by Samsung, reports DigiTimes. The negotiations come as Apple is preparing to begin production of two new OLED iPhone models for release this fall.
Apple is reportedly negotiating with Samsung Display for a reduction of the price of OLED panels as the iPhone X vendor is seeking to lower the production cost in order to ramp up sales of OLED-based models, according to industry sources.
Currently, the OLED panel is estimated to account for about one third of the total production cost of an iPhone X. Apple is allegedly 'requiring' Samsung lower the unit price from $110 USD to $100. It's expected purchase up to 100 million panels from Samsung this year, 25 million for the iPhone X and 75 million for its next generation models.
It's estimated that Apple bought about 50 million OLED panels from Samsung in 2017. This year, LG Display may be added as a supplier, giving Apple extra strength in negotiations.
