Apple to Pay 150% More for OLED iPhone 3D Touch Components? [Report]

Apple has accepted a quote from TPK Holdings to manufacturer the 3D Touch solution for its upcoming OLED iPhone. The quote is allegedly $18-22 USD, 150% higher than the cost of manufacturing the 3D Touch solution for current generation devices, reports the Economic Daily News via DigiTimes.

For 3D Touch solution used in existing iPhone series, TPK and fellow maker General Interface Solution (GIS) quote US$7-9 per smartphone. The solution directly bonds 3D Touch sensors on LTPS TFT-LCD display panels of the iPhone, but 3D Touch solution for OLED panels entails bonding of a glass cover on the front and back side of an OLED panel each to reinforce the fragile OLED panel.

According to the report, the overall increased processing cost is 50% higher for OLEDs than LEDs; however, the quote is 150% higher. Thus, TPK and GIS are expected to significantly benefit from Apple's orders. TPK has already passed certification.

Apple is expected to unveil its next generation iPhone in September. Please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for updates.

Undoubtedly Apple will develop its own technology to drop these guys since the increase in cost is not necessarily for real expenses but rather pull Apple's leg. If the price goes higher than past years, I'm still gonna get the new iPhone BUT waiting a few months for potential issues.

I stopped paying. not updated my iPhone or iPads since iPhone 6 except I "stepped back" from 6 to "5 SE" (iPhone 5 has got the best design so far in my opinion, has a headphone jack still and I actually like the small size)...

Apple will cut costs in other areas. They have always offered the next generation devices at the same price.

Except the iPhone 7 Plus started at $20 more than the 6s Plus did.

I've been with apple since the beginning, but If the iphone gets to be above $1000 for the basic model, i will finally have the excuse to jump ship.
