Apple is Working on a 3D Camera for the iPhone 8 [Report]

Apple is working with LG to develop a 3D camera for the next generation iPhone, according to a report from The Korea Herald.

The camera module will reportedly use LG Innotek's dual camera.

Sources close to the situation said, “Apple is now studying how to apply its 3D camera technology into LG Innotek’s smartphone camera,” adding, “Since LG Innotek also has its own 3D camera and related technologies, such joint efforts will likely to bear fruit sometime within next year.”

The site notes that Apple gained 3D camera technology from LinX, an Israeli startup the company purchased in April 2015. The technology adds depth to photos by dividing the image in three stages.

Apple acquired an Israeli start-up LinX in April 2015 for US$20 million, absorbing the latter’s 3D camera technology. LinX, founded in 2011, has the technology of adding more depth to photos by dividing the digital image in three stages.

We've been hearing reports for some time that the 10th anniversary iPhone will be a major update. It will purportedly have a front glass cover and chassis, joined by a metal bezel and an edge-to-edge display that has no bezels on the top and bottom. Additionally, the front camera, Touch ID, speaker, and other sensors will apparently be embedded into the display. Another report claims that the device would be a clear piece of glass with a next-generation OLED screen. More recently, Apple is said to have be equipping the phone with wireless charging.

Apple is normally not invent the first thing like you said 3D camera, touchscreen, and so on. Apple is always reinvent the existing function that one previous inventor couldn't do much better into a perfect user experience. When the software, technology & hardware are ready, Apple will release the new feature with powerful marketing strategy while the inventor just did their part leaving the "miracle touch" of advertising & relate to the user experience.

So in the 8s there will be a 3D screen for viewing said 3D images taken on the 8 all part of the upgrade cycle.3d touch makes sense with a 3D ui and all.Apple is slow to innovate we should already have the fruit of the linX patents in our iPhones today. Also charging past 2.1 amps would be a nice feature to charge our phones at a decent rate.

Just go back in time to year 2011 and buy LG Optimus 3D P920, LG already had this 3D camera years ago. This is year 2016 apple just start working on 3D camera? Year 2016 apple want us to carry adaptors and dongles with phones and laptops?? Year 2016 apple started to sell laptop with touchbar? When other companies sell touch screen laptops for years. apple is years behind in innovation now, .. Very greedy company this one
