Psystar Releases Software to Enable Mac OS X Installation

Posted October 22, 2009 at 4:42pm by iClarified
Psystar Corporation has begun selling the software it uses to run OS X Snow Leopard on generic Intel hardware. Available for download directly from Psystar.com, the Rebel EFI suite allows users to easily install any OS on their computer.

Available today, Rebel EFI allows machines with Intel Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, i7 or Xeon Nehalem CPUs to install any modern operating system, including Mac's newest release of OS X. Users would simply download the new software from Psystar.com, burn it onto a CD and follow the onscreen instructions to easily install the OS.

A demo version of the software will also be available for download free of charge so users can test-drive the software before purchasing. The demo version would still allow users to install Mac OS X onto their computers, but with limited hardware functionality as compared with the full version.

Windows 7 is supported on all Psystar computers and by the Rebel EFI. Through the use of the Darwin Universal Boot Loader, available in the full version of the Rebel EFI, computers are capable of installing and running multiple operating systems, including the newly released Windows 7 as well as XP, Vista, various Linux flavors and OS X Snow Leopard.

The Rebel EFI software supports a wide range of hardware profiles. As the software evolves, it will automatically update to take advantage of additional drivers and increased functionality.

In conjunction with this software release, Psystar will begin the Psystar Labs approval program. Users who are having difficulties getting a specific device to work correctly on their machines would send in their component to have it certified. The most common hardware set-ups are compatible, and through PsyLabs we will continue to work toward the Rebel EFI supporting an ever-broader range of hardware profiles.

Both the demo version and full release of the Rebel EFI are available now at Psystar.com. Rebel EFI costs $89.99 and is currently on sale for $49.99.

You don't need to pay to achieve what Rebel EFI does, this is a joke... though I suppose for those with no technical knowledge and looking to have the support of Psystar this may be useful. Even tough Psystar is currently in a legal battle with Apple that has been going on for more then a year, and may soon be going out of business. I'm working on creating a new site for OSX86 users unlike anything that is available currently which will make finding compatible parts and building a compatible system easier then ever. At present, the library of supported hardware exceeds that found on the Wiki. Best of all it will be a free service. It's not expected to be ready until sometime in the first quarter of 2010.

If this is the case then why haven't anyone or group compiled this library of supported hardware info that exceeds what is found on the Wiki. Atleast they have the ball to fight apple.

Because people have to contribute to and maintain the wiki. And some of those that contribute don't provide very detailed information or links for the drivers or further information. It's better to search the forums most of the time then it is the wiki.

I think it's great what they are doing, it gives others a chance to experience the Mac world even if it is on a PC.
