Apple Patents Method of Sharing Files With a Handshake

Apple Patents Method of Sharing Files With a Handshake

Posted June 29, 2015 at 8:09pm by iClarified
Apple has filed an patent that details methods of exchanging information between devices in proximity based on various gestures. The patent is entitled, "GESTURE-BASED INFORMATION EXCHANGE BETWEEN DEVICES IN PROXIMITY".

Notably, it would let users transfer information when they meet. For example, when a handshake gesture is detected, perhaps by your Apple Watch, it would initiate the exchange.

Certain embodiments of the present invention can facilitate the exchange of information (including but not limited to contact information) between user devices (e.g., mobile devices) worn or carried by two different users. The exchange of information can be wholly or partially automated and can occur in response to a device detecting a“greeting event.” In some embodiments, a greeting event is detected when two user devices belonging to different users are in proximity and the users of the devices concurrently execute a greeting gesture, such as a handshake, bow, hand slap, hug, or the like.

Apple notes that in response to a single greeting event, each participating user device can act as both sender and receiver, selecting and sending information items to the other user device and receiving any information items that the other user device selects to send. Users could also control and customize what information their devices send in a context-specific manner; this can allow users to manage and control the sharing of personal data and/or other information items according to their preferences while still allowing the exchange to occur automatically (without being expressly initiated by the user).

Anyone else wondering why that server is drawn like a Windows server? Come on, Apple. Fix that! We are tired of running Windows Updates all day long and want an Apple server - something better than a Mac Mini!
gamerscul9870
gamerscul9870 - June 29, 2015 at 10:43pm
1. When did Apple involve windows despite running their apps on it, 2. The server is not a computer from what they are using for their IP address or whatever they do, 3. The server drawing is an example of whatever is powering the signal between devices shown.
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking - June 29, 2015 at 11:41pm
I was just pointing out the fact that Apple has clearly used a server that is not an Apple product. You obviously know nothing about technology, and you've also missed the point of my comment, which was to say I'd prefer an Apple server - but nothing other than a Mac Mini is available. (I know we can use a Mac Pro, but we can't get more than a 1Gbps connection without adapters.) There's an enormous desire to have better Apple servers out there. IT professionals want Apple but need better options.

gamerscul9870 - June 30, 2015 at 11:55am
You don't even know if Apple really does have a server Apple product or not. You obviously have no way of proving it aganst me.

Probably because Apple doesn't use their hardware for the cloud back end in their data centers http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/06/09/apple_maiden_data_center/ I can't find anything about software, but my guess is it is a custom unix based OS apple created in house. Similar to what Google and Facebook does. But in the end this doesn't really matter because I am sure this new idea will be put into icloud and like everything icloud it will be handle by Apple.

Bump does pretty much the same thing. Why is this even a patent? Or I can use NFC very easily.
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking - June 29, 2015 at 9:57pm
Bump requires you to "bump" your phones. This is about shaking hands or bowing or whatever those other guys are doing.
gamerscul9870
gamerscul9870 - June 29, 2015 at 9:58pm
One. It's supposed to be a function that's done with gestures, Two. Bumping requires taping both devices together which needs to be right next to each other compared to this. 3. Location can pull his off due to how this patent shows what's needed.

Androids can detect what gesture you are making? I would be curious how does that work without a watch accessory.
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking - June 29, 2015 at 9:55pm
I'm sure you can't do this with Android. Besides, they will only do it if Apple files the patent first. So now we all win. Cool feature.
gamerscul9870
gamerscul9870 - June 29, 2015 at 9:59pm
Since when did android do this involving gestures? Copied android for years? Yeah right.
gamerscul9870
gamerscul9870 - June 29, 2015 at 10:45pm
My dad won a tablet he never used which ran android and let me tell you, it was the first and last time I ever got involved with it. That was all we could use because we couldn't afford the iPad in which I got 3 years later, but now the android tablet is long gone and from there been an iOS user.

Even if they lost that much in which never has, still changes nothing. They still remain the top global company for a few years.
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking - June 30, 2015 at 6:29pm
Doesn't change the fact that they invented the phone you carry, whether it has an Apple logo or Android, Samsung, or Microsoft logo. Same with any tablet you may also own. Or any OS with an arrow pointer, a window, a File menu, Copy and Paste, or a modern word processor where you can center text and change the font, or use a paint program. Love them or hate them, you have to acknowledge the fact that Apple is the reason we have all of this today. Our legal system is horrible and a stupid judge can make a stupid ruling. Happens all the time. But the truth still exists.

Macs don't have copy and paste. And Xerox invented the Graphic User Interface and mouse. And realistically you have to thank Microsoft for giving Apple money when they where about to go bankrupt.
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking - June 30, 2015 at 7:21pm
Wrong. You can now watch the video of Jobs unveiling the first Mac and watch Gates say how great the Mac is, showing pictures of Microsoft using Macs. I've heard Xerox did the mouse first but since they make a different product it's not too relevant - unless you want to say Microsoft copied Xerox - but they didn't. They copied Apple. And why do you say Macs don't have copy and paste?
Woz
Woz - June 30, 2015 at 7:40pm
Wait you've heard that Xerox did the mouse first? Apple ripped off the mouse and the GUI from Xerox. Bill Gates saved Apple twice. I forgot about the first time. The Apple II had a big problem. It wasn't compatible with business software. Bill Gates made a circuit board that made the Apple II compatible with business software. If it wasn't for Gates Apple would have gone out of business then. And what part am I wrong about? Mac doesn't have keyboard shortcuts for copy and paste.
gamerscul9870
gamerscul9870 - June 30, 2015 at 9:12pm
Gates saved Apple my ass. Xerox mouse doesn't even look like the Apple mouse, plus the GUI was made completely by themselves and programmed differently or supported Xerox with a few modifications. Apple II's so-called big problem was fixed by themselves. Gates didn't work at Apple, he'll even by the looks of how their OS worked is enough to tell how much effort they needed to put work into them to support Apple products. Apple computers nowadays have their own power to support modern windows OS so... If it hadn't been for Gates, nothing would change because Apple before and after the Apple computer still do good without Microsoft themselves. Besides, who needs keyboard shortcuts for copy and paste anyway when you can simple cut the text by pressing delete?
Woz
Woz - June 30, 2015 at 10:01pm
Jobs didn't even know anything about a mouse and GUI until he went to Xerox. And copied the idea from them. And really Apple developed softcard? That was made by Microsoft. Without the Apple II had nothing.
gamerscul9870
gamerscul9870 - June 30, 2015 at 10:33pm
Then where is a comparison to prove the copying? Plus, the computer is still apples work and not Microsoft so...
Woz
Woz - June 30, 2015 at 10:47pm
Comparison of what? Mouse and GUI from xerox to Apple? Again Jobs didn't even dream up of a Mouse and GUI before he saw it at Xerox.

Xerox didn't sell a personal computer for the home. Apple did.
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking - June 30, 2015 at 11:24pm
Keyboard shortcuts for copy: Mac is Command-C while Windows is Ctrl-C. Paste is the same with V. Cut is the same with X. Mac had copy and paste before windows did.
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking - June 30, 2015 at 11:25pm
The board you're talking about was for PC compatibility, to make the Apple a dual system. That's all.
Woz
Woz - June 30, 2015 at 11:39pm
Actually Xerox did sell a personal computer the Xerox Alto. The softcard wasn't for PC compatibility it was for software compatibility and it was very important in Apple's early success. Without it Apple had a lot less software.
gamerscul9870
gamerscul9870 - June 30, 2015 at 11:50pm
There has been bad Apple products other than that, but some of them were just as good as Apple II itself, but still, either way, it doesn't affect Apple badly. So what if the Apple II did fail that bad? It's long gone compared to where they are now. Long story short, Apple II doesn't hurt Apple if it needed anything or anyone else to do what it should do.
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking - July 1, 2015 at 12:14am
Woz, you're right about the Xerox. Jobs said Xerox could have owned the entire industry but they blew it. The Alto came out in the early 70's and what did they do with it? Nothing. Regarding the board, that's what I meant - I had one in an Amiga when I was a kid. But copy and paste was always in the Mac.
Woz
Woz - July 1, 2015 at 6:22pm
The point is that if it wasn't for the Microsoft Softcard Apple would have folded and not be here today.
gamerscul9870
gamerscul9870 - July 1, 2015 at 6:30pm
Even without the Microsoft card, you don't know how much it would affect Appple bad or good, but they still do better without them. Microsoft or not changes nothing bad about them anyway so even without it, they still would be here. One tiny computer wouldn't kill a company. That's like saying the game boy kills the Nintendo company if it doesn't sell. If you look at many of other companies' failures of food, consoles, and cars, they still survived without them. I cN go on with this list, but I'm just proving my point here for a good estimate of what would have happened back then.
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking - July 1, 2015 at 6:59pm
The point is actually that the phone you're holding in your hand is an Apple product, or a product stolen from Apple with a different logo on it. The card was some other issue you brought up along with "Macs don't have copy and paste." Maybe Microsoft wouldn't be around if it wasn't for Apple - think of that? Microsoft just copied Apple's OS and "pasted" it onto DOS. Apple routinely produces original products while the others follow with copies. The act of shaking hands transferring contact info is another great feature Apple will invent, and the patent you see here will be copied, just like the others.
Woz
Woz - July 3, 2015 at 2:14am
Don't you remember when Microsoft invested $150 million into Apple. Without that investment Apple would have gone bankrupt.
Woz
Woz - July 3, 2015 at 2:21am
Except that everything Apple ever made was a copy of something else. There computers were just copies of Xerox mouse and GUI. They had never even thought of it before they saw it Xerox. Jobs even said, "We have always been shameless about stealing great ideas" https://youtu.be/CW0DUg63lqU What did Apple copy in their iPhone? iOS7 introduced gestures that they copied directly from Blackberry 10. The settings panel that you swipe up from the bottom on an iPhone is a copy of Android's quick settings. The multitasking card interface the iPhone has? Palm made the card interface in 2010 on the Palm Pre. I had that phone. Apple ripped it off. The fact that the iPhone has multitasking. Windows phone and Android had that long before Apple even thought about doing that. There were smartphone before the iPhone came out. The individual parts that made the iPhone already existed before Apple "invented" them.
gamerscul9870
gamerscul9870 - July 3, 2015 at 2:29am
even without that money Apple still would succeed. Plus everything Apple made is completely original. There were computers that were given from Xerox to Apple and everything with it. They even knew from the get go that happened. Their computers may have had Xerox on it but the mouse is what's really original even from just looking at the two. Even Jobs said "Pretty much, Apple and Dell are the only ones in this industry making money. They make it by being Wal-Mart. We make it by innovation." What did Apple completely make on their own. Gestures that have no relation to blackberry because they still used a shrunken computer keyboard instead of a touchscreen keyboard, the swipe up is where you access control counter in which on android you swipe down. The multitasking interface has been on iOS for quite a while even around palms phones the way iOS 6 or before shows it. Whatever Apple makes copy or not simply works if not look great with special effects. Even though Android and windows phone may have had their own ideas, they don't compare to what iOS can do. There were phones before Apple that came out but were more primitive. Most of them may seem like they tried to do the impossible but it wasn't until 2007.

SayingWhatEveryonesThinking
SayingWhatEveryonesThinking - July 3, 2015 at 7:39am
He said it in the context of the adage "there's nothing new under the sun" or "smart people borrow, geniuses steal." Jobs also said Android was a stolen product. It still is.
