Apple to Use Oxide TFT Display Panels for Next Generation iPad?

Apple is planning to use low power-high resolution oxide thin film transistor (TFT) panels for its next generation iPads, according to a new report from ETNews.

To prepare for the change, LG has reportedly begun investing in an 8th generation (2200x2500mm) P8-P9 line for oxide TFT processing. It's facilities were able to produce 9,000 sheets per month last year. The expansion will increase capacity to 30,000 sheets per month and another expansion for next year is estimated to add about 20,000 sheets to its capacity. That would exceed Sharp's capacity of 30,000 sheets per month.

A well-informed LG Display related official said, “Investment to produce 30,000 sheets next year’s second quarter have started. Apple is creating iPads with 12.9 inch display, which shows they are increasing the panel size. And because so, we are planning in expanding production rate as well.”
The reason why LG Display is expanding their oxide panel production line is because Apple has decided to use oxide panels in their future iPads and iMacs. Oxide TFT LCD has lower power base with ease to design slimmer and also excellent in touch sense than the previous a-Si TFT LCD.


It's believed that Apple plans to obtain oxide TFT panels from LG, Samsung, and Sharp.

This report corroborates one from last month that predicted Apple would start production of a 12.9-inch iPad in the third quarter of this year.
