Apple will unveil a new Apple TV set top box at WWDC in June, reports John Paczkowski for BuzzFeed.
Sources familiar with the company’s plans tell BuzzFeed News that a successor to its dusty and recently discounted Apple TV set top box is headed to market as well. Apple intends to show the device off at its annual World Wide Developers Conference in June along with a long-awaited App Store and a software development kit to help developers populate it.
The new device will be a significant overhaul of the current Apple TV, setting the foundation for Apple's vision of what the TV viewing experience should be like. Paczkowski says the new Apple TV is the company's play for the 'mythical digital living room' which offers access to TV, music, apps, and home automation.
Recently rumors have heated up suggesting that Apple is negotiation with programing providers to offer a slim bundle of about 25 channels on the Apple TV. The service is estimated to cost between $20-$35/month.
The Apple TV will also get an updated design, the latest A8 chip or a variant of it, a 'dramatic' increase in on-board storage to accommodate apps, an improved operating system, Siri, and presumably a new remote. The device is also said to enable Siri for Homekit-enabled home automation devices as previously reported.
The price of the new set top is still unknown but it will likely cost more than the current Apple TV which has now been discounted to $69.
Apple should fix and improve the Remote app or Miracast will take over.
Spending $ on a new hardware remote is not helping for there are millions of users out there who are thirsty for better ways of navigation.
It would be nice if I could install the new XBMC on it whiteout a jail-brake and when it could play all the known formats, then I would buy 1 in a heart beat.
The fact the the Apple store has the Apple TV "Starting" at $69.99 confirms a revamp, and also confirms that the existing ATV and the new one will sell simultaneously. Meaning Existing ATV's for all the other TV's and the Living Rooms gonna get the new kid :-)
So excited! It's about time for a re-vamp, I've been holding off on getting a new one for add'l TV's and nothing was doin'..... Interested to see the app store and a new remote... OH! Wait!.... Eureka moment...... the remote should connect with the remote app on your iphone.... When you loose the damn thing (I have 2 kids... lost every damn day) You can press a button on the iphone remote and the Apple TV remote will make a sound... Hmmmm. So 1980 but still sooooo damn relevant to parents lol.
True... But sometimes when the ATV is off, the iphone App does not connect.. asks for home sharing to be turned on. Also, I have a 6+.... rather use the smaller remote.
