Apple will unveil a new Apple TV set top box at WWDC in June, reports John Paczkowski for BuzzFeed.
Sources familiar with the company’s plans tell BuzzFeed News that a successor to its dusty and recently discounted Apple TV set top box is headed to market as well. Apple intends to show the device off at its annual World Wide Developers Conference in June along with a long-awaited App Store and a software development kit to help developers populate it.
The new device will be a significant overhaul of the current Apple TV, setting the foundation for Apple's vision of what the TV viewing experience should be like. Paczkowski says the new Apple TV is the company's play for the 'mythical digital living room' which offers access to TV, music, apps, and home automation.
Recently rumors have heated up suggesting that Apple is negotiation with programing providers to offer a slim bundle of about 25 channels on the Apple TV. The service is estimated to cost between $20-$35/month.
The Apple TV will also get an updated design, the latest A8 chip or a variant of it, a 'dramatic' increase in on-board storage to accommodate apps, an improved operating system, Siri, and presumably a new remote. The device is also said to enable Siri for Homekit-enabled home automation devices as previously reported.
The price of the new set top is still unknown but it will likely cost more than the current Apple TV which has now been discounted to $69.
