Apple Watch Price Predictions Reach $19,999 Ahead of Tomorrow's Event

Posted March 8, 2015 at 8:12pm by iClarified
Daring Fireball's John Gruber has come out with his price predictions for the Apple Watch ahead of the company's Spring Forward media event tomorrow.

Back in September, Gruber said that when Apple announces its price list for the Watch, he expects "the tech press to have the biggest collective shit-fit in the history of Apple-versus-the-standard-tech-industry shit-fits."

They’re going to say that Jony Ive and Tim Cook have lost their minds. They’re going to wear out their keyboards typing “This never would have happened if Steve Jobs were alive.” They’re going to predict utter and humiliating failure.

Interestingly, and perhaps upsetting to many potential customers, Gruber now believes that it isn't the gold Apple Watch that will cause a 'shit-fit', rather it's the steel model whose price will be surprisingly high.

The only thing I would change about this is that I now think it’s the steel Apple Watch pricing that is going to cause the massive collective shit-fit. Most people have wrapped their heads around the fact that the gold Edition models are going to cost at least $5000, and so have already written off Apple Watch Edition as something for the wealthy luxury market. But the steel Apple Watch, that’s something that most people still look at as for them. And so they expect the starting price to be around $500, and the various leather and metal band options to cost $100-300 more.

Without further ado, here are Gruber's 'guesses' as to what the Apple Watch will cost (38mm/42mm):
● Apple Watch Sport (all colors, with Sport Band): $349/399
● Apple Watch, steel, Sport Band: $749/799
● Apple Watch, steel, Classic Buckle: $849/899
● Apple Watch, steel, Milanese Loop: $949/999
● Apple Watch, steel, Modern Buckle (38mm only): $1199
● Apple Watch, steel, Leather Loop (42mm only): $1299
● Apple Watch, steel, Link Bracelet: $1499/1599
● Apple Watch, space black steel, Link Bracelet: $1899/1999
● Apple Watch Edition, Sport Band: $7499/7999
● Apple Watch Edition, Modern Buckle (38mm only): $9999
● Apple Watch Edition, Classic Buckle (42mm only): $10,999
● Apple Watch Edition, Gold Milanese Loop: $14,999/$16,999
● Apple Watch Edition, Gold Link Bracelet: $17,999/$19,999

Wow way too much for me to buy a watch like that.

Way too much for a watch! I've had this $20 Casio watch for almost 5 years now. It looks decent and I only wear it just to know the time (isn't that what a watch for?) All I care for in this event is whether there will be a new Apple TV or a new Mac Book Air.

Honestly speaking, I am always hyped about new iPhones/Pads/mini/McPro/Pods/etc. multi purpose gadgets that have reasonable price...... But but but this one just hit right thru my eyeballs...... I'll definitely pass for once on this besides other gadgets they may release.

A big Apple fan here. Bought almost every product from them. These prices don’t look realistic to me.

He's in the ballpark and as many have already predicted the watch will be the biggest failure of recent years for Apple. There is just not a large enough market for it. Period!

you know, i'm still half thinking that apple would come out and say hey we can make it cheaper.. 299 start which will create a buzz. but i doubt it. the shareholders would have a hissy fit and the stock would tank, at least for the short term. i REALLY REALLY hope that the 349 price is for the sport at ANY size. if i have to pay 399 for the bigger size sport version, i will seriously hold off on purchasing. i'm worried about the price creep. 350 for the women's sport, 400 for the men's sport, hey you want some other band? add 100 etc.... i'm thinking the steel is valued at 449-499. if it's more, apple will not sell this model well. there's not much more value you are getting. gold can be priced at whatever because no one will buy it. it's there to be in a glass case for people to oogle at. it's just like you go into a car dealership. all the fingerprints are on the 911 but the people are buying the boxster. gold version is to raise the perceived value of the watch.

You only buy Rolex when you think that it is the ultimate watch because for years you have been told it's the watch to have ... So when you have enough money to buy a Rolex you don't look around the market to see what's available now ... This is the fact

Because Rolex watches are indespensible with their luxurious quality build and it can last long or forever being an automatic/mechanical/even the round battery type watch. It's water proof depending on what type that can reach 100ft or more underwater. And it is not "Made in China"

If the watch costs this much its dead in the water. Period. No one in their right mind will pay that much money for a first gen. watch with one day battery life. It is just a fricken watch right? Im not gonna lie and say I'm not getting one but I promise you it will be the cheapest 42mm they got! However if they do pull that off it will be the gutsiest move I've ever seen them make.

starting from 329 for sports, steel from 429 with options of bands with 50$ addons I guess. Gold i dont know may be starting from 2000 or so. not that much steep as people are saying.

Way too much money for a watch!! Think about it! Ipad mini 399 and a watch that is only 1/8 off the size of an iPad and still cost's the same. Weird

You hit the spot!.... Definitely gonna save that cash to get either a new iPad/mini that has more function/features at the same or close range price.

I'm pretty sure he has know idea what he's talking about. Or on the other hand, it's a very cheap anchoring technique. Now Everyone imagines how they cannot afford the watch but once it will go out they will price with a much lower price and everyone will be like "hey it's just 500 dollars, I can definite afford it"

I am a fan, but no way would Apple make it that impossible to buy a watch! It's not even close to that amount!
