Google Confirms It's Working on a Mobile Payments Framework Called 'Android Pay'

Google has confirmed that it's working on a new mobile payments framework called 'Android Pay', reports The Verge.

Speaking at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Google SVP Sundar Pichai revealed that Android Pay would be an 'API Layer' that developers can use to support secure payments on Android.

The API layer would work with both in-app and in-store payments.

"We are doing it in a way in which anybody else can build a payments service on top of Android," said Pichai. "So, in places like China and Africa we hope that people will use Android Pay to build innovative services."

Pichai said that the platform would "start with NFC" and eventually expand to accommodate biometric sensors, likely meaning fingerprint scanners.

Google says that Android Pay and Google Wallet will be separate services but Google Wallet will rely on Android Pay's framework. When asked if Android Pay will compete with Samsung Pay, Pichai said the two companies are on "slightly different timelines" and that they would "work closely [together] to see how we can align [with them]."

We'll share more details about Android Pay and how it will compete with Apple Pay in the near future. Please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for updates.
