Square founder Jack Dorsey has announced that the company will support Apple Pay next year, reports CNN.
As it stands now, Square's hardware allows businesses to accept credit card payments via iPads and iPhones, with customers swiping their cards through a tiny square device. But the technology is not currently equipped to accept Apple Pay. The hardware will have to be reworked to be compatible with the Apple Pay system, allowing for potentially seamless transactions from one mobile device to another.
While Apple Pay and Square could be seen as competitors, Dorsey says he doesn't see it that way.
"We're not building a credit card. We're not building a payment device. We're building a [cash] register, and this register accepts all these forms of payments," Dorsey told CNN in an interview.
Notably, Square has also announced that it is releasing its Square Register app globally. You can download it from the link below...
Accepting Apple Pay at book signings would be cool (and more conductive to impulse buys). Can't wait until they implement it. Right now, there are tens of thousands of users anxious to use Apple Pay, but only a handful of shops accepting it. I go out of my way to use Apple Pay, but it's hard finding anyone to give my money to.
