Apple's Quest for a Thinner iPhone 6 May Result in Yield Issues

Apple's quest to produce a thinner iPhone 6 may result in yield issues, according to a new report from the China Times via GforGames.

Apple has apparently decided to use just one brightness enhancement film (BEC) in its backlit LCD display in order to save up space. Previously, iPhone models have used two BEFs.

The reason why a single BEF could cause yield issues is because the remaining layer needs to be better enough to get the job done by itself. As for the alleged yield problems, these reports suggest that some of Minebea’s backlight orders will be taken over by OMRON and Radiant.


Contrary to previous reports, the iPhone 6 will allegedly continue to use in-cell technology. The main suppliers are said to be LG, JDI, and Sharp, despite rumors that Innolux was replacing Sharp.

Finally, the source said that mass production of the iPhone 6 will start in July for a September launch.
