A young Chinese couple has been accused of selling their daughter and using the proceeds to buy an iPhone and other goods, according to state media.
Shanghai prosecutors have brought a case against the couple for human trafficking after they illegally put their third child up for adoption through online postings and accepted money for the baby, the Liberation Daily reported.
The mother is said to have purchased an iPhone, high-end sport shoes, and other products with the money.
The couple told police that they gave away the child so that she could have a better upbringing than they could afford, since they already had two children. “Giving away the child was not for obtaining benefits, but giving the child better guarantees,” one said.
The exact amount of the transaction is unknown; however, their online posts referred to 30,000 yuan and 50,000 yuan ($4920.60 and $8200.90).
In 2012, five people in southern China were charged with intentional injury after a teen sold his kidney so he could buy an iPhone and an iPad.
