Hacked AT&T Carrier Update Could Improve Your Network Performance

Hacked AT&T Carrier Update Could Improve Your Network Performance

Posted May 19, 2013 at 10:47pm by iClarified
Joseph Brown, who recently released a hacked T-Mobile Carrier update with Sky Zangas, has now released a hacked AT&T carrier update that allows the iPhone to connect to the band giving off the strongest signal rather than the preferred band, both with LTE and HSPA+.

This could improve network performance for some users. Here's how it works:

--
This hack enables Release 9 DC-HSPA+ on the iPhone 5 and iPad 3, 4, and mini as well as enhancing LTE data and signal. Though AT&T is limited to HSPA+ 21, the device itself becomes more open to an increased amount of bandwidth thus allowing for better throughput of data and data connection. This is very convinient for users in areas that don't yet have LTE coverage. This hack also includes a fix to any and all iPhone 5 users who have experienced degraded/weakened signal over the past couple to few months on the PCS 1900MHz and/or CLR 850MHz bands for HSPA+ as well as the APT 700MHz and/or AWS 1700MHz band for LTE.

The issue was due in part to the newer revised iPhone 5's that came with the AWS band enabled for HSPA+, if you were to ever choose to leave AT&T for T-Mobile. It set the band preference for HSPA+ to CLR and LTE to APT which can cause conflictions and problems when you're in an area with towers on different bands with stronger signal. The setting has been set back to the default “auto” setting and should help the 4G HSPA+/LTE signal perform a bit better, whether your iPhone 5 is the older edition or the revised edition. This hack will also help you connect to the strongest tower rather than the preferred type of tower, whether on HSPA+ or LTE.

More details and instructions on how to install the hacked carrier update can be found at the link below...

Hey joe, I have an iPhone 5 bought from the Middle East and I need a carrier package for AT&T that the VAR enables facetime. All is carriers don't specify that facetime to be active but on the Middle East phones it has to. Is this something you can do? Can this do that?

Here is a question that hasn't been asked. Since this hacked carrier file changes the preference to the strongest signal rather than the preferred band, will it connect to a EDGE network over HSPA Plus network when it detects the EDGE network has better signal? If so, that would be very bad because I would rather have 1 bar on 4G than 5 bars on EDGE network.

That's not what we meant. AT&T uses 2 bands/frequencies for both HSPA and LTE. Rather than the phone being limited to one of each of those bands, we've enabled auto band selection mode so it picks the strongest band if you're on HSPA or LTE. This WILL NOT drop you to EDGE.

Can someone please assist me, my iPhone is stuck on searching after using the revert guide for the Jailbroken iPhone. I have tried all the methods of rebooting and turning off/ON settings nothing is fixing this. If anyone has the original carrier update file for the iPhone can you please upload.it and shoot me a link? Thanks

Here is how to find original att 14.0 , it is on your phone: "Yeah i was able to fix it. You'll need to use ifile if you have it and you're jailbroken. Also follow the revert steps which were : Jailbroken users will need to navigate to var/mobile/Library/Carrier bundles/iPhone or iPad and delete the ATT_US.bundle folder entirely as well any files located in var/mobile/Library/Carrier Bundles/overlay. This however didn't fix it for me. Thankfully ios stores all the original stock bundles in /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/ Find the att bundle there and copy it to var/mobile/library/carrier bundle/iphone or ipad if you're using iPad. reboot your device and you'll be back on stock ATT 14.0 hope that helps you."

That worked perfectly. Followed ur Mac instructions on iTunes 11.02... & had no issues. In fact it completed so fast I wasn't sure it worked till I checked the AT&T version (changed to 14.1). It increased both my WIFI & Cell connection by 5-10%. Thanks Again Joe!

Jojos, I don't get it? Besides the fun 666 reference, your speeds are half of what they were; only your ping time is a bit faster... I'm confused.

Anyone notice anything different about battery? My phone does drain noticibly faster than before but it's not bad enough to warrant the massive inconvenience of restoring. And I have rebooted multiple times.

Is there a way to do this through ifile? Please post instructions.

Confirmed; working flawlessly on jailbroken iPhone 5 iOs 6.1.3. Speed does increase as I am using Personal Hot Spot (off course it's free) using Tether app in Cydia. Thank you so much to the creator. Anyone who is interested should try and give the gentleman credit. You need to follow the steps and if you have problems, the revert instruction is right there.

Hey Joe, Which version of iTunes is best to use?And does the ios version matter?
Joe
Joe - May 20, 2013 at 9:29pm
I'm not too sure about the newest version of iTunes that just came out but it should work on all version of iTunes and iOS that support the iPhone 5. :)

Didn't work on latest iTunes, win7x64 :( Command line doesn't start iTunes, nada.
Joe
Joe - May 20, 2013 at 11:33pm
It's not supposed to start iTunes. Only activate carrier testing. If you didn't get any errors then it should be working.

Anyone try this on a phone with straight talk? Straight talk is a AT&T MVNO. So it should work.
Joe
Joe - May 20, 2013 at 9:28pm
Straight Talk is so limited that it won't make a difference. Trust me on that.
Simon
Simon - May 21, 2013 at 1:34pm
Limited how? They use AT&T's HSPA PLUS NETWORK. just no LTE. why wouldn't it make a difference?

I don't goin to touch my jailbreak u crazy why u guy no make a cydia tweak ????
Joe
Joe - May 20, 2013 at 9:27pm
Is anyone forcing you to do this? I don't have the resources to do it as a jailbreak tweak as I don't own a repo nor am I jailbroken. Also, it wouldn't be fair to keep regular users out of the loop either.

How do you know for sure it "took"? I did the hack last night, says went thru on iTunes, but where can I see a chance in the phone? I can put the phone in "field test" to show which sites, and LTE bands I'm using, but is that the correct place? BTW for field test mode dial *3001#12345#* then call...
Joe
Joe - May 20, 2013 at 7:11pm
Go to Settings > General > About and if it says AT&T 14.1 then you did it successfully.

I experienced one problem is you guys have microcell DON"T upgrade. You will loose your microcell connection.
Joe
Joe - May 20, 2013 at 4:41pm
This hack doesn't get rid of M-Cell. If you read earlier in the comments then you would've seen that. It still works. It just doesn't show M-Cell in the carrier logo is all. No big deal.

I'm actually really happy it does that haha I was suck of seeing m-cell up there.

Tried the hack and got nothing but searching..... Did a restore and thank god it came back. I have an iPhone 5 thats just a week old that was on 6.1.3. The restore updated the version to 6.1.4. Now all I have to do is rearrange all my apps the way I like (sigh)
James
James - May 20, 2013 at 3:34pm
You didn't have to restore. There are ways to update only the carrier update without restoring. It's actually quite simple if you googled it.
Clive
Clive - May 20, 2013 at 3:43pm
I did not know that was possible. Thanks for the info.

Where can I download the original carrier update file?
Simon
Simon - May 20, 2013 at 1:37pm
I'm on straight talk (AT&T pre-paid) HSPA . I wonder if this will improve my connection too. Afraid to install it since I'm jailbroken. Would hate to lose my jailbreak if I had to restore.
Alex
Alex - May 20, 2013 at 2:03pm
Wait for jailbreak instructions and files (.pri). That way it's easy to fix. The way it is now, it's very likely to mess up your jailbreak when you lose modem.
Joe
Joe - May 20, 2013 at 4:45pm
Not ganna happen Alex and here's why. This creates an entirely new carrier bundle. The bundle currently used for AT&T iPhone 5s and iPads is located in System/Library/Carrier Bundles/iPhone or iPad. The new bundle is located in var/mobile/Library/Carrier Bundles/iPhone or iPad. Completely separate bundle locations of which have nothing to do with each other.
