Apple has confirmed the opening of a retail store in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, according to a statement emailed to select press outlets.

Apple has confirmed the opening of a store brand in Brazil. The first Apple Store will open in Brazil in Rio de Janeiro and will also be the company’s first own store in South America ”We look forward to the opening of the first Apple Store in Brazil, where we have long standing customers and hope to win many more each day. [We] can not wait to offer the unique Apple retail people of Rio de Janeiro and customers from across the region,” the company said by email on Tuesday

Fair prices? In Brazil? No way. The iPhone 4S have been produced by Foxconn in Brazil, but the prices have all but decreased.

Brazilians are used to it and seem to be OK paying those prices, even knowing they'd be paying much less in any other country. The same happens in other industries as well. Cars in Brazil are the most expensive in the world, and some car makers haven't gone bankrupt yet thanks to the Brazilian market, where they can have above-100% profits on each card sold. Take the Honda Civic as an example. One can get it in the US for about US$ 17,000. In Brazil it would set one back at least US$ 30,000. And that's not taking into account the taxes that must be paid every year just for owning it, which can be anywhere between 1% and 6% (depending on the state its license plate is registered) of the car's current price. Apple is not going to lead a change to that scenario.

Thats not fair, here in Puerto Rico a lot of people love this brand, Apple should open an Apple Store here to be the first one on the Caribbean.

Well I have been to Brazil and both my parent are born and raised in Brazil. Both of you are wrong. They wont need to have a guard for each product in the store, maybe just a few security. But trying not to get robbed or killed on your way to the apple store is a different story. :)
