Amazon Had Its Biggest Day of Kindle Fire Sales Following iPad Mini Announcement

Posted October 28, 2012 at 2:30am by iClarified
Amazon revealed that it sold a record number of Kindle Fire HDs following the announcement of the iPad mini.

Amazon spokesperson Drew Herdener told AllThingsD, “Wednesday was the $199 Kindle Fire HD’s biggest day of sales since launch and up 3x week over week."

Since Amazon never releases actual sales data, we don’t know how many Kindles that translates to, but still, the statement may surprise some who had expected Kindle sales to fall once Apple had a comparable device on the market. But given that they did the opposite it might imply that some people were waiting to see what Apple announced — and how much it would cost — before making their decision.

Apple has spoken out to defend its $329 price tag for the iPad mini which is substantially higher than that of 7-inch tablets offered by its rivals.

So they sold 200 instead of 100 the day before? Lol. Either share the sales data or STFU amazon!

HAHA...Really? I bought the Nexus 7 for my girlfriend. First of all, the $199 version has only 8GB of storage. The 16GB costs $249. Then there's a hefty shipping charge, which Apple doesn't charge at all. Now we're at less than $50 difference and PLEASE, while the Nexus is pretty cool, let's see how quickly my gf will abandon ship when she sees the iPad mini with an almost 1" bigger screen, diagonally. As for the resolution, they had to go with XGA, as that's what all the apps are made for. It's still a healthy 163ppi with an IPS panel. Yea, I think Apple will be just fine and I see that Nexus 7 going on CL fairly quickly.

200 fire, 330 mini! Well it's build quality alone is well worth the 130!! The fire is nice and all but it does feel cheep in your hands and is not as versital. So duhh!! Of course the mini will cost more.

Amazon's $79 Kindle costs $89 just to manufacture it without adding the cost of marketing, and operation cost. Amazon Kindle Fire HD, on the other hand, is being sold at cost. You will never get iPad-alike mobile OS (iOS), or the other related software supports (e.g. App store), or all other features iPad can offer to customers from Amazon. What is so good about Amazon's pricing strategy is that they focus on making money solely on the sales of digital content such eBooks and movies. It's a totally false to assume that people will be buying Kindle Fire HD for what it is worth, instead they are only buying it 'cause they are being a dirty cheap. I hope Microsoft's current market share of less than 2% in tablet PC market will increase, so that can accommodate those consumers who's going to buy just about anything that is cheap. Whether you like it or not, the sales of iPad doubled, much in the same way about iPhone5.

ipad3 the worst decision I ever made by trusting apple. Apple just told world that ipad3 is placement product. mini will also just be a place holder I bet.

By not having a retina display on the iPad mini Apple has shot themselves in the foot, it's that simple.

Wowww and how much power???? It is THE SAME leds that make the white all other are pixels of the LCD that are not so much power consuming. The light is the one that consume the power and it is SAME on both LCDs Sure may be retina cost 10$ more and apple don't want to lose 10$ :) Or it keep it for the next year BIG invention surprise.

Plain desperation trying to defend Apple from an Apple fan... Yes having retina might be difficult for designers to design mini tablet thinner. Since Apple can ONLY use retina display for high resolution screen, its impossible for them to have a fine display as other 7" tablets. So.. Have said from an Apple fan, good thing they used ancient technology screens on iPad mini to make it easier to carry. But then whats wrong with the price?? Cheaper parts = less expensive. Am i doing the math wrongly?

Wrongly? Lol. Just for the use of the word wrongly, I discount your entire comment as useless.

The Real fact is you do not have a single comeback from my statements. Except pointing out choosing a wrong word. Cute :)
