Phil Schiller on Dropping the Optical Drive, Lack of Blu-ray

In an interview with Time, Apple SVP of Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller, talks about the decision to drop the optical drive and not support Blu-ray.

“In general, it’s a good idea to remove these rotating medias from our computers and other devices. They have inherent issues — they’re mechanical and sometimes break, they use power and are large. We can create products that are smaller, lighter and consume less power.”

Schiller points out that software distribution is largely digital and in regards to Blu-ray, it has its own problems.

“Blu-ray has come with issues unrelated to the actual quality of the movie that make [it] a complex and not-great technology…So for a whole plethora of reasons, it makes a lot of sense to get rid of optical discs in desktops and notebooks.”

Schiller also confirmed that Blu-ray support isn't a highly demanded featured any more.

I totally agree with Apple about not having optical on Air - minilaptops but not sure why not having it in desktops. I really wouldn mind that my imac is a bit thicker if that would add option to backup my whole piclibrary to one blueray-disk. I admit that using like twice a year optical for other shit but as backup - and copying larger amount of data (for your friend for example) would be pretty handy with it. External drices are too expensive to give away and uploading 50gigs to Cloud is way too slow... Sorry Phill - i think youre bit too early with this shit on desktops. Must be just vanity the urge to make everything freaking superslim....

Remember the floppy disk? Backup to bluray? Why not use thumb drives?

another mistake that's will make Apple lose more customers!!!! WTF. it's like every new decision Apple made this year was the worst they could make and now another stupid decision, and don't tell me the reason is power because it only uses power if you use it.

I do want optical drives, I am fine with having to have an external one, but please do not stop supporting it! Just add Blu-Ray support in OS X!
