Apple has posted a job position for a Manager/Lead SoC Modeling Architect as it pushes forward in its own chip design efforts, notes TechCrunch.
I recently spoke with iFixit's Kyle Wiens, he emphasized that what Apple stood to gain by taking the reins on its own SoC design was improved power consumption and better performance, and every single core responsibly on the list of this new posting emphasizes those points.
The position is description as a "unique and highly visible role". The candidate "will be at the center of a chip design effort interfacing with all disciplines, with a critical impact on getting functional products to millions of customers quickly."
Core Responsibilities:
As a member of the SOC Micro-Architecture team, the ideal candidate will be responsible for all aspects of performance and power modeling of SOC designs including:
Leading a team of performance modelers/architects in modeling and exploring performance and power aspects of SOCs
Working with SOC design teams, software, systems and physical design in optimizing performance and power
Definition and maintenance of key usage scenarios that drive performance and power optimization
End2End correlation of models through RTL and silicon/systems using defined performance and power profiles
Recently, iFixit and Chipworks partnered to post a teardown of the new Apple A6 chip used in the iPhone 5.
