Apple's plans for a cable television set-top box device could simplify access to programming and let you start shows after they've begun, reports the WSJ.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company proposes giving viewers the ability to start any show at any time through a digital-video recorder that would store TV shows on the Internet. Viewers even could start a show minutes after it has begun. Time Warner Cable Inc. offers a limited version of this feature called Start Over.
Another significant feature of the Apple set-top device is likely to be its user interface, which could resemble the navigation icons on Apple's iPad. While the design may change, the interface is expected to be easier for people to use than existing cable on-screen menus, widely viewed as clunky.
It's also said that the device would connect with social media letting you share your favorite shows.
Finally the device will reportedly provide access to older seasons of shows which are already available through iTunes.
If apple is going to tap into the TV world, they need to start with the ability to turn on the TV. There is nothing I hate more than having to use several controllers to do one function. IR for iPhone would be sick
Not a DVR. All the daily scheduled programs are cached on cloud each day for a predetermined time lag. Otherwise it would be no different than steaming.
It's streaming... But worse... If it has already started then you stream from the cloud... But if it started too long ago it's gone... Sounds like bad streaming to me.... Perhaps there's more to it though!!!
hehehe i spy with my own eye a thread headed for troll city bay-bay! so wait lemme understand this freakin genius new idea, start streaming a show at any time, now where have i seen that before.......no, where HAVENT i seen that before
oh look a troll. This is very different than a DVR. A DVR you have to manually set shows to record. This feature apple wants to do with the cable providers is the next generation of DVR. No DVR is required as it all stored online. Think if it as VOD,without having to wait the next day for is to post like most HBO shows
