Apple is planning to build a new data center and business and purchasing center in Reno, Nevada, according to a RGJ report.
The company intends to invest $1 billion in Northern Nevada over the next 10 years if Reno City Council approves a deal that offers tax abatements from the city and state, including sales and property tax. The council will consider the deal tomorrow.
Today the Washoe County Board of Commissioners is considering abatements for the planned data center in the Reno Technology Park, located east of Sparks along Interstate 80. Mike Folks, an Apple spokesman, said the company wants the project to become operational later this year. "We're looking at a 30-year relationship," Folks said.
A staff report reads, "The prospective tenant, Apple, Inc has stated the desire to construct and operate a new data center in unincorporated Washoe County, Nevada at the Reno Technology Park and to establish and open a regional business, purchasing and receiving office in the (Tessera District)."
The data center (called "Project Jonathan) is estimated to generate up to 41 jobs, 200 long-term contractors, and 580 direct construction jobs.
The downtown Reno business park would be located in the 'Tessera District' located south of I-80 and east of Virginia Street.
