Verizon Wireless is Now Charging a $30 Upgrade Fee

Verizon Wireless is now charging a $30 upgrade fee for customers who purchase subsidized mobile equipment with a two-year contract.

On April 22, Verizon Wireless is implementing a $30 upgrade fee for existing customers purchasing new mobile equipment at a discounted price with a two-year contract. This fee will help us continue to provide customers with the level of service and support they have come to expect which includes Wireless Workshops, online educational tools, and consultations with experts who provide advice and guidance on devices that are more sophisticated than ever.

While the upgrade fee is not unique to Verizon Wireless, most devices can be traded in with our green friendly trade-in program at www.verizonwireless.com/tradein as a way to save money or potentially offset the fee completely.

The $30 fee is slightly lower that AT&T and Sprint's $36 fee but higher than T-Mobile's $18 fee.

Thumbs down from a 20 year subscriber. First the new every two downgrades, then the loss of annual upgrades for high value two- year contracts, and now the addition of the "upgrade" fee. So in a few short years we've gone from the ability to upgrade every year (or get $100 to wait out 2 years) to having to pay $30 every two years for a biennial upgrade. at the same time my bill went from $60 to over $100 due to the addition of texting and data, which in my mind more than offsets the incremental cost of a smart phone over a regular phone subsidy.
