Take a Look at Apple, Nokia, and RIM's Proposed Nano-SIMs [Images]

Here's a look at what Apple, Nokia, and RIM's proposed nano-SIMs look like. The Verge got a hold of the proposals from each company and notes that new card must support eight electrical contacts.

Apple maintains the old configuration; in other words, with an adapter, you could theoretically use their nano-SIM in a micro-SIM or mini-SIM phone sold today. Nokia and RIM take a very different approach. The 4FF proposals from Apple's competitors look more like microSD cards than present-day SIMs, which would presumably make it difficult or impossible to use an adapter to get them working with older phones.

Nokia has argued that its proposal, unlike Apple's, would not require a tray. The company also argues that Apple's design could get stuck in a micro-SIM slot violating the following requirement for the standard:

The design of the fourth UICC form factor shall prevent the 4FF from becoming jammed in a Mini-UICC reader. An example is that if the 4FF is turned 90 degrees and it fits perfectly into the Mini-UICC reader (4FF length = Mini-UICC width).

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute will make a decision on the standard at the Smart Card Platform Plenary meeting later this week. Apple has committed to grant royalty-free licenses if its nano-SIM standard is adopted.

Apple is right on this one. If you travel to third world countries like I do if I was stuck with a Nokia sim slot on my phone there is no chance I can use that phone in any of those countries for a year or two until they all adapt to selling that type of SIM. If apple has there way it's good for everyone because you can always use a SIM from anywhere cut it and stick it in your phone and your good to go.

But a nano sin will give more room in a slim phone? Ok make all sims the same size so they can be inter changeable from phone to phone and just agree on a way to insert them into the phone Thats ok with most phones, apart from apples iPhones as you can't take the back off the phone to insert a sim So this really is about apple wanting it's own way, as they could just make the tray smaller for the nano sim Other phones would have to make big changes to take the nano sim but what ever way that works out sim cards should all be the same size agreement on that would be a great move for every phone owner. There is no need for a dam nano sim. Everyone is fine with their microsim. Who's with me?

there is a need for smaller sims. if u shrink the size of the sim, there would be more room for other components such as battery to increase usage time, or quad-core processor, or 2 ram modules, etc... or a much slimmer form factor.

True true. But lets say we wanted to swap sims to a different phone we would have to get new simcards and all besides switching back and forth if we desired. Also unsupported carriers if a phone was unlocked what about the people who want sim free but their carrier don't support that specific simcard?
