The New iPad Can't Make FaceTime Calls Over 4G

Posted March 15, 2012 at 4:06am by iClarified
The iPad still can't make a FaceTime call over the cellular network despite the new model's support for LTE 4G networks, reports The Verge.

As you can see in the positively vexing screenshot [below], attempting to initiate a FaceTime call over LTE fails out with a message exhorting you to connect to a Wi-Fi network. It's the exact same behavior that iOS devices on 3G networks have always exhibited, and it's doubly frustrating as many of those devices can serve as Wi-Fi hotspots.

It's pretty clear that AT&T and Verizon are responsible for blocking this capability in the U.S. It remains to be seen if carriers in Canada and abroad will impose the same restriction.

why would you?
why would you? - March 15, 2012 at 4:14am
why would you want facetime for 4g? making a facetime call on an iphone 4s under 3g for 1hr is about 500+mb of data. if they allowed this people would have problems with data over charges..

I believe people should have the right to choose how they connect to FaceTime. Sometime wifi is not always present. Yes it will consume a lot of data but unlimited data plans are also available.

Well AT&T changing their unlimited data plan. If you go over 3gb the throttle one. Which sucks. And I have unlimited data. Well I had it it's not a such thing anymore

We have people here in the US that would not put together that FaceTime uses data, therefore going over their plans and having to pay more. Instead of blaming themselves, they would blame Apple and their carrier. It's a customer experience issue, the same reason iDevices don't use Flash; they CAN, it just causes other issues that Apple does not want users to have.

You say that now and when you go over your data you'll be crying a different tune!
