New MacBook Air and Mac Mini Support Bluetooth 4.0

The new MacBook Air and Mac Mini released today support Bluetooth 4.0, observes AppleInsider.

The Bluetooth 4.0 specification was officially adopted last June, but Apple's previous Mac products, including the new iMacs and MacBook Pros, only supported Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate). Wednesday's update means the new MacBook Airs and Mac minis completely skipped the Bluetooth 3.0 specification as Apple opted for the latest standard.

The Bluetooth SIG completed the Bluetooth Core Specification version 4.0, which includes Classic Bluetooth, Bluetooth high speed and Bluetooth low energy protocols. Bluetooth high speed is based on Wi-Fi, and Classic Bluetooth consists of legacy Bluetooth protocols. This version has been adopted as of June 30, 2010. [W]


Last month, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) today announced the addition of Apple to its board of directors.
