AT&T Introduces New Monthly Billing Option for Tablets

Posted March 3, 2011 at 1:41pm by iClarified
AT&T today introduced new postpaid billing options for tablets. Beginning today, customers can choose between AT&T's existing prepaid billing options or the new postpaid plans. The new plans can be added to customers' existing monthly wireless statements, offering the simplicity of a single monthly bill. For a limited time, customers who activate a new postpaid $25/2 GB plan will receive the first month free.

The new postpaid billing option will be available across AT&T retail locations, as well as att.com, Best Buy, Fry’s, select Nexcom locations, and Walmart stores nationwide.

"Tablets offer the convenience of mobile broadband virtually anywhere and our new billing options give customers the flexibility to choose how they prefer to be billed," said David Christopher, chief marketing officer, AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets.

Customers may choose from the following options:
● Postpaid: $14.99 for 250 MB or $25 for 2 GB. Customers on the 2 GB plan who exceed their monthly data allotment will be charged $10 per 1 GB of overage. Charges will appear on customers' monthly wireless statements.
● Prepaid: $14.99 for 250 MB or $25 for 2 GB. Customers on the 2 GB plan who exceed their monthly data allotment may choose to purchase an additional 2 GB for $25. Charges will appear on customers' credit card statements.

Both options are month-to-month and do not require a long-term commitment.

Thanks for this post. It reinforces where I was leaning already. AT&T data prices are absolute insanity for the iPad. Combine that with the $130 surcharge for, what, a $5 part (?) to add the 3G capability, and yeah, I'll pass. WiFi only version for me. The number of times I would find myself with the iPad wanting 'net access and not near WiFi are very few, and if I'm going to be gouged for using the net in public, I might as well pay Boingo or whoever and save the $130 outlay. Curious how many WiFi vs. 3G versions Apple has sold/will sell. Am I missing something or is the 3G model just a ripoff all around?

True, Anonomuz. I'm grandfathered in on the iPhone and (kind of ironically) that's the only thing that will keep me with AT&T instead of switching to Verizon when my contract is up. I liken the mobile phone business to the movie theaters. Theaters sell snacks at such ridiculous markups that I never, ever, ever buy anything there. If they just had an ordinary brazen price that was 3x what I should pay, I'd probably go for it, but since they charge 20x what I should pay, I just can't do it. Ditto for the 3G data plans from AT&T and Verizon.

I would like to know how you have unlimited data on your iPad. I too had my iPad 3G from day 1 and set up data and June they came out with limited data and so did my iPad. AT&T said that their are no contracts therefor they could not give me unlimited data anymore.

Wow so much for 3G. I will go for wifi. 2gb is nothing. It cool if I use it for two minutes. Most of us be very busy on the Internet, like Facebook, myspace,YouTube and so on. There an app for that. It call jailbreak. One thing for sure wifi is better and faster the 3G. All my friend use wifi just to download apps. So AT&T keep your cheap 3G 2gb for your workers. 2gb won't last a month. It just add more money to their company. Be smart and save. Stay with wifi.

@ Castro When AT&T announced that they were trashing their unlimited data plan they also said that like the iPhone owners the people who already have unlimited data will be grandfathered as long as they don't change their data plan. So if you've ever switched your data plan to anything to where you were/are paying less than 30 bucks or switched plans and didn't make sure you kept your unlimited data, then you lost it. AT&T won't tell you anything because they want people to switch from it and have to deal with the headaches of tiered pricing because if you go over your cap, more than likely you'll end up paying more than 30 bucks a month for eve less data. They're also trying to do this with your home's Internet too, AT&T, Verizon, Time Warner etc... are all currently lobbying to seriously tier your home Internet data.
