This tutorial will show you how to upgrade your iPhone 4 to iOS 4.3.1 without upgrading its baseband using TinyUmbrella for Mac.

Currently there is an issue with older basebands such as 1.59.00 and FW 4.3.1. Until ultrasn0w is updated, you will only see one bar under signal strength.

Please Note: This ONLY Works with the iPhone 4!

Step One
Download TinyUmbrella from here. Also make sure to download the iPhone 4 iOS 4.3.1 firmware which you can find here.

Step Two
Double click the downloaded TinyUmbrella pkg file to and follow the prompts to install the application.

Step Three
Double click to launch TinyUmbrella from your Applications folder.

Step Four
Make sure the device is connected, and Umbrella has detected the type of device and its firmware.

**If you haven't already saved your iOS 4.3.1 SHSH blobs then click Save SHSH. Make sure they successfully save before continuing.

Step Five
Hit Start TSS Server and make sure you receive no errors.
How to Update Your iPhone 4 Without Upgrading the Baseband (Mac) [4.3.1]

Once The TSS Server is "running" successfully, umbrella will kill iTunes. Leave TinyUmbrella Open.

If you do receive an error, DO NOT continue. Your restore will not work if the TSS server cannot be started.

Step Six
Open iTunes by doubling clicking its icon in the dock.
How to Update Your iPhone 4 Without Upgrading the Baseband (Mac) [4.3.1]

Hold down the Option key and click Restore

Select your iPhone 4.3.1 firmware file from the popup window that appears and click Open.
How to Update Your iPhone 4 Without Upgrading the Baseband (Mac) [4.3.1]

Click Restore to begin restoring your device.
How to Update Your iPhone 4 Without Upgrading the Baseband (Mac) [4.3.1]

Step Seven
iTunes should give you error 1013. This is what we wanted, as it notes the baseband has not updated :) Click Ok and close iTunes.

If you get a 16XX error then try entering DFU and go to step 5.
If your restore does NOT end in a 1013, it means your baseband was updated. This is likely because you did not have the TSS server running OR you updated without TinyUmbrella OR you are working with a device OTHER than iPhone 4.

Step Eight
Fix Recovery in TinyUmbrella is currently not working for the latest firmware versions. Download the standalone Fix Recovery to kick your device out of recovery mode on 4.3.1 from here.
How to Update Your iPhone 4 Without Upgrading the Baseband (Mac) [4.3.1]

Extract the file by double clicking on the downloaded archive.
How to Update Your iPhone 4 Without Upgrading the Baseband (Mac) [4.3.1]

Double click the fixrecovery43 program from within the folder we just extracted. During this process you will notice scrolling text on your iPhone 4.
How to Update Your iPhone 4 Without Upgrading the Baseband (Mac) [4.3.1]

Step Nine
Your iPhone will now be on 4.3.1 without having upgraded the baseband! If you have the 1.59.00 baseband you can now unlock using this tutorial).

I got this error after upgrading Jailbroken and Unlocked iPhone 4 with baseband 01.59.00 on iOS 4.0.1 to iOS 4.3.3 using this guide: "Unable to find gBdevList Unable to find fs_mount Unable to find fs_unmount Unable to find fs_load _file Greenpois0n initialized" It was a mess to fix it but I was lucky enough to find this post that save my life and USD 400 that I paid for my iPhone: These are the steps that I followed: 1- Open Tinyumbrella and click Fix Recovery 2- While it is launching Greenpois0n go to the terminal and run ./irecovery -s a couple of times. That stops Greenposon to load and the iPhone will get a white screen. 3- Then I opened Redsnow, Extras and click on PWNED DFU. 4- Finally I Restore from iTunes a Custom ipsw 4.3.3 created with Pwnage

Hey everyone! I was wondering if this works with Verizon's 4.2.7? I keep trying to downgrade to 4.2.6, but its not allowing me to. Even after TinyUmbrella, 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com, and DFU mode. I tried doing this method a bunch of times but kept getting the "Setting to configuration 1 Setting to interface 0:0 opening device 05ac:1281... " thing on the recoveryfix. I haven't tried putting it into DFU mode during that time, so I'm going to try again soon, but I'm also wondering if it has something to do with me being on my college's internet. Any suggestions?

What's your BB (BaseBand) and your device? You can make a custom firmware with Pwnage Tools to preserve your BB, but if you are using an unlocked iPhone (Software Unlocked) first look your BB to know if you can upgrade it!

i tried this today(4/6/11) and i read the comments and put my iphone 4 bb 2.10.04 into dfu mode and ran the fixrecovery43 and when terminal comes up at the end it says Reason: Incompatible library version: fixrecovery43 requires version 6.0.0 or later, but libcurl.4.dylib provides version 5.0.0. Trace/BPT trap logout any help will be truly appreciated. thank you.

Fish - April 4, 2011 at 5:26pm
Ah, never mind. You have to put it into DFU. Just open up the batch file. The first thing the terminal window will say is to put it into DFU. So, while it is doing this "Setting to configuration 1 Setting to interface 0:0 opening device 05ac:1281... ".. Just hold the home+power button in fo 8 seconds, then release the power button.. voila!

Thanks Fish. That worked like a charm. However, now the phone needs to be set up form iTunes. If I restore from a previous backup will I lose the jailbreak?
Fish
Fish - April 4, 2011 at 6:15pm
Good stuff. Well, if you have already jailbroken your device and also synced it with the old backup I recommend using redsn0w for the jailbreak as it does not require reinstallation of the firmware like pwnagetool.

Thanks this worked! The trick is timing it just right to enter DFU mode.

miro - April 20, 2011 at 3:38am
you jsut have to time it right according to what fish wrote.. 'while it is doing this "Setting to configuration 1 Setting to interface 0:0 opening device 05ac:1281... ".. Just hold the home+power button in fo 8 seconds, then release the power button' it most definitely works, I also had to try 2 or 3 times..

this is the message the fix is giving me: dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/lib/libcurl.4.dylib Referenced from: /Users/shyam/Downloads/fixrecovery-osx/fixrecovery43 Reason: Incompatible library version: fixrecovery43 requires version 6.0.0 or later, but libcurl.4.dylib provides version 5.0.0 Trace/BPT trap logout [Process completed] Also I have no idea what Fish is talking about... Get ne one give me details?

Hey Fish, i've felt relax when you wrote never mind, but then im still couldnt kick out of recovery mode. Im upgrading to 4.3.2 bb 01.59.00. I've got only to the error 1013 rapidly, but then, could compleate the last step. The worst thing is that i only have the shsh for the 4.3.2 fw, nor any previosly one. Can you say to me some magic words? would really apretiate sooo much. Thank you!!

How long the restore process is supposed to last? The progress bar in my iphone do not pass little more than half bar and iTunes progress bar is stucked near the end process.. should I unplug and retry in DFU mode?
Pat
Pat - April 4, 2011 at 9:28am
I did everything, but I can't get it out of recovery mode. I'm in DFU and run fixrecovery43, but in terminal it keeps repeating the same three lines: opening device **ac:****... Setting to configuration 1 Setting to interface 0:0 (The * just replace the numbers that are actually there)
Pat
Pat - April 4, 2011 at 9:32am
Also, it says I should see scrolling text on my phone when i open the recovery. I don't, it just has the connect to itunes the whole time.

Same for me. Did anyone test this?
Pat
Pat - April 4, 2011 at 12:02pm
I have solved it. I redownloaded the recovery tool and it worked. Make sure you enter DFU. If anything comes up (apple, etc.) when trying to enter DFU, then you did it wrong. It should stay a black screen until the lines, as described in the walkthrough, appear.

I keep having the same problem! I keep putting it in DFU mode, but the same lines keep showing up on the recovery fix over and over again. any more solutions/suggestions?
Pat
Pat - April 26, 2011 at 10:40pm
If you have the error in my first post, then you still are not going into DFU mode. When trying to put it in DFU mode, nothing should show up (apple logo, etc.). It took me at least 10 times to get the timing right. Timing is very important for entering DFU mode. Search for some hints about entering DFU. Eventually, you will get the timing right and you'll know it because the text will appear on the iphone screen as described in the walkthrough. I reiterate that anything besides this text means your timing is off. My timing varied only a second or two different but eventually it was right and everything went as described.
