Meta Adds Real-Time Voice Conversations and Expressive Avatars to Muse [Video]

Meta is rolling out real-time voice conversations and expressive avatars for Muse, letting users speak with its AI agent on mobile, web, and Mac. The update is starting in the United States after a preview at Connect 2026.

Users can start a conversation by tapping the phone icon in the app's top-right corner. The voice mode supports interruptions, so they can jump in with a follow-up rather than waiting for a response to finish. Hundreds of voices are available, including styles inspired by a New Yorker or a pirate, and the selection can be changed at any time.

The avatar adds a visual response to the conversation, using expressions and gestures that match its tone as it listens and speaks. Users can choose voice only, keep the avatar alongside the chat, or display it full screen. This is a conversation with an animated AI character, rather than a video call with another person.

Meta suggests using the feature to develop an idea, plan a trip, or rehearse a job interview or presentation. The company says Muse can continue working on a task while the user talks, allowing requests to take shape through a conversation instead of a single written prompt.

The experience combines Muse Realtime Voice and Muse Realtime Avatar technology. In a technical explainer, Meta describes a shared stream of speech tokens that drives both the spoken response and the generated avatar video, keeping the voice, lip movement, and expressions synchronized.

Meta's chief AI officer Alexandr Wang shared a demonstration of the new mode, with a dog avatar responding to his request for advice:

Muse launched as a personal AI agent for tasks such as sending emails, shopping, and planning trips. Voice conversations are also coming to AI Glasses and Muse Charm, but those versions are not part of the initial rollout.

The service is for users 18 and older. U.S. users can try the new features in the Muse app or through Muse on the web as the rollout reaches their accounts.
