Best update option for me? Iphone 4s running jailbroken ios 5.0.1

I'm starting to get annoyed with my current ios because I can't update a lot of apps. I would like to update and immediately jailbreak. Is it possible to update to an intermediate ios instead of the latest version? Like 6.0.1? Or should I just update with iTunes to 6.1.3 and get a tethered jailbreak? I'd prefer to avoid tethered if I can, and I'm wondering if I have any other options aside from not updating at all. Thanks in advance.
