OpenAI is reportedly moving up the launch of its next major model update, aiming to release GPT-5.2 as early as next week in response to recent progress from Google. The new target date is December 9.
The Verge reports that CEO Sam Altman called a "code red" inside the company after Google rolled out Gemini 3 last month. OpenAI had planned to deliver the update later in December, but the push to respond quickly prompted the earlier schedule. People familiar with the plan say GPT-5.2 is intended to narrow the performance gap created by Google's latest model, and internal tests reportedly show it ahead of Gemini 3.
The pace of updates reflects how quickly the AI competition is tightening. GPT-5.2 follows closely behind GPT-5.1, which introduced stronger reasoning and more customization tools less than a month ago.
These developments also matter for Apple users. OpenAI models handle advanced requests for Siri and other Apple Intelligence features, and the company recently expanded its presence on macOS with the release of ChatGPT Atlas, a new AI-powered browser.
OpenAI is not only facing pressure from Google. Anthropic recently shipped Claude Opus 4.5, which the company says brings major gains in coding and complex reasoning. Although December 9 is the current goal for GPT-5.2, the timeline could shift if engineering or capacity issues arise.
