Apple is preparing to add a live translation feature to its AirPods, enabling real-time interpretation of in-person conversations, according to a Bloomberg report citing sources familiar with the matter. This capability is expected to launch later this year as part of a software update linked to iOS 19, the next major release of Apple's mobile operating system.

The feature aims to make cross-language communication more seamless for AirPods users. Sources explain that if an English speaker hears someone speaking Spanish, the iPhone will translate the dialogue into English and relay it through the AirPods. The English speaker's responses would then be translated into Spanish and played via the iPhone's speakers. While Apple has offered its Translate app on iPhones since 2020, this move integrates that technology directly into the AirPods experience. Google Pixel Buds have provided a similar function for years, but Apple's version could appeal to its ecosystem loyalists.

An Apple spokesperson from the Cupertino-based company declined to comment on the report. The sources, who requested anonymity due to the project's confidentiality, provided no further specifics on the rollout.

This AirPods enhancement is part of a larger software update slate for 2025. Bloomberg earlier noted that iOS 19, paired with a revamped macOS, marks Apple's most extensive operating system refresh yet, targeting a modernized look and feel across its platforms. The translation feature ties into broader language improvements planned for iOS 19, though details remain limited.

Apple has consistently upgraded AirPods through software, sparing users the need for new hardware. Last year, the second-generation AirPods Pro received hearing health tools, like a hearing aid mode and self-testing options. On the hardware front, Apple is developing a third-generation AirPods Pro and a model with AI-enabled cameras, following recent releases such as new AirPods Max colors and the AirPods 4.

For AirPods owners, this reported feature could add practical value, especially for travel or multilingual settings. Expect more clarity as iOS 19 nears, likely highlighted at this year's Worldwide Developers Conference.
