Apple's iPad Air is on the verge of a refresh, with inventory tightening at retail stores, according to a new report from Mark Gurman.

In a recent newsletter to subscribers, Gurman states that Apple is winding down stock of the current iPad Air, mirroring patterns seen with the discontinued iPhone SE and the existing MacBook Air.

Apple has been laying the groundwork for this refresh for months, and the current inventory depletion aligns with typical pre-launch behavior. The entry-level iPad is also experiencing stock constraints, suggesting it could be updated alongside the Air. No upgrades are expected for the iPad Pro until the M5 chip arrives, keeping the focus squarely on these mid-tier models for now.

Although the iPad Air's stock shortages indicate an upcoming reveal, Gurman notes that an announcement is unlikely in the next few days. Instead, the M4 MacBook Air is expected to be Apple's next product launch. Sources suggest Apple is preparing for the Mac-related announcement as early as this week. So we could see a staggered rollout, with the MacBook Air launching first, followed by iPad updates.

The current iPad Air, particularly the 13-inch version, has performed well for Apple. It outsold the pricier iPad Pro over the holidays, thanks in part to its $799 price tag and capable M2 chip. The larger display, ideal for video and multitasking, has proven to be a popular selling feature. Notably, base models of both the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Air are currently out of stock on Amazon.
