Apple has issued a statement as concern rises over the growing number of suicides at Foxconn Technology Group.

Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai, employs about 800,000 workers in China and makes electronics for customers including Apple, HP, and Sony.

There have been nine suicides and two attempts at the China operations this year, a Hon Hai official told Business Week, declining to be identified.

“We’re in direct contact with Foxconn senior management and we believe they are taking this matter very seriously,” said Steve Dowling, an Apple spokesman. “A team from Apple is independently evaluating the steps they are taking to address these tragic events and we will continue our ongoing inspections of the facilities where our products are made.”

Apple is “saddened and upset by the recent suicides at Foxconn,” he said.

Some reports have indicated that the number of suicides is not abnormal. The USA has an average suicide rate of 11.1 per 100,000 people per year. That means that Foxconn would need 88.8 suicides per year to reach the US average.
