NordVPN has announced 'NordWhisper,' a new protocol designed to allow users to connect to VPN servers from networks that limit traditional VPN traffic.
NordWhisper is based on web tunnel technology, which operates differently from traditional VPN protocols like OpenVPN or WireGuard. Most VPN protocols have distinct characteristics, such as specific traffic signatures and behaviors. These patterns can sometimes be recognized and blocked by network administrators. While many protocols incorporate obfuscation techniques to counteract this, some network policies can still filter them out.
NordWhisper mimics regular web traffic, making it more difficult for network filters to detect. Essentially, it blends in with ordinary internet activity, providing users with a reliable way to browse restricted networks while maintaining the same strong encryption and security as other VPN protocols.
The company notes that while NordWhisper improves accessibility, it may not always offer the fastest speeds. Users on unrestricted networks are encouraged to use other protocols for better performance.
The NordWhisper protocol is rolling out gradually. Initially, it will be available on Windows, Android, and Linux, with support expanding to more platforms over time. Once available, you will have the option to manually select it in the VPN connection settings of the NordVPN app. If you experience connection issues due to network filters, give it a try.
If you don't already have NordVPN, it's currently on sale for 73% off with a 2-year subscription.
