Apple Zero Bezel iPhone Faces Development Delays and Uncertain Launch Timeline [Report]

Apple is reportedly working on a zero-bezel iPhone, but it likely won't be ready by 2026, according to a new report from The Elec.

A source told the site, "For Apple to release a zero-bezel OLED iPhone in 2026, technical discussions with domestic panel manufacturers should have already concluded, but they are still ongoing. As of now, even a 2026 launch for a zero-bezel iPhone appears uncertain."

The company is said to aim for a design that retains the flat display and sharp edges of current iPhones while achieving a bezel-free look. This would involve the display curving seamlessly over the sides of the device, similar to the design seen on the Apple Watch. The form factor has been described as "pebble-like." Adding complexity, Apple reportedly wants to avoid the "magnifying glass effect" seen in other curved displays.

To meet these design goals, Samsung Display and LG Display must develop technologies such as Thin Film Encapsulation (TFE), which protects OLEDs from moisture and oxygen, and Optical Clear Adhesive (OCA), used to bond transparent double-sided adhesive films to the curved edges of the display. Additionally, they need to ensure sufficient space for critical components like antennas.

Progress on OCA technology has allegedly been slower than expected, with unresolved issues including side-view distortion and increased breakability from side impacts. Another challenge is rerouting circuits typically located under the OLED bezel to beneath the display itself.

At a forum last year, a Samsung representative said, "We are preparing products with under-panel cameras (UPC) and zero-bezel OLED concepts." They explained, "To achieve zero bezels, the light transmittance of the UPC must be increased to over 50%, and the pixel structure must be optimized. Tasks like 3D bonding and brightness control at the edges are technical challenges."
