Apple has announced that Tap to Pay on iPhone is now available in New Zealand. Tap to Pay on iPhone enables merchants to accept payments directly from contactless credit and debit cards, Apple Pay and other digital wallets through a partner-enabled iOS app — no additional hardware or payment terminal required.

With Tap to Pay on iPhone, merchants can accept contactless payments through a supporting iOS app on an iPhone Xs or later running the latest iOS version. At check-out, the merchant will simply prompt the customer to hold their contactless credit or debit card, iPhone or Apple Watch, or other digital wallet near the merchant's iPhone, and the payment will be securely completed using NFC technology2. No additional hardware is needed, so merchants can accept payments from wherever they do business.

Starting today, Adyen, ANZ Bank, Stripe, Windcave and Worldline are the first payment platforms in New Zealand to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone. Payment apps me&u and Timely will also have Tap to Pay on iPhone available at launch. Tap to Pay on iPhone will be available across New Zealand at merchants such as Air New Zealand, Lorna Jane and R.M.Williams. Tap to Pay on iPhone supports contactless credit and debit cards from leading payment networks, including American Express, Discover, JCB, Mastercard and Visa.

All transactions made using Tap to Pay on iPhone are encrypted and processed using the Secure Element, and Apple doesn't know what is being purchased or who is buying it.
