Check out this early teardown of the new Apple M4 Mac mini. The teardown was shared by Brandon Geekabit on YouTube today.
Teardown on the smallest Mac ever! The 2024 Mac Mini with M4 Chip. The ultra-small form factor makes tearing down this device an absolute mess!
Key Observations
● "The Mac Mini has a really interesting cooling setup. It intakes cool air through the front half of the grill and exhausts it through the rear. This is clearly designed to handle heat in such a compact form factor."
● "One unexpected discovery here—the rear metal grill actually doubles as an antenna. Apple's making use of every bit of space in here."
● "Now, I'll tell you right off, this Mac Mini is not easy to take apart. Apple's used a mix of Torx screws ranging from T3 to T9, plus black tape and adhesive covers. They're definitely not designing this to be user-serviceable."
● "The internal layout is surprisingly compact. Take a look—the power supply is almost as big as the logic board itself. If Apple used an external power supply, they could probably shrink this device down even more."
● "Apple has chosen to cover up many of the chips on the logic board with adhesive covers. It's almost like they're intentionally hiding some details of the board's components."
● "While some components like the fan, speaker, and power button are technically modular, they're buried deep inside and connected with tricky screws. So, while it's possible to replace them, it's no easy feat—definitely in line with Apple's high-repair-difficulty approach."
● "Finally, here's a closer look at the heat sink, carefully designed to handle the new M4 chip. Apple's gone to lengths here to make sure this powerful chip can stay cool in such a tight space."
