Apple Smart Home Screen to Feature Old School iMac-Like Base [Gurman]

Apple is working on a smart home screen that will allegedly feature an old school iMac-like base, according to a new report from Mark Gurman.

In a newsletter to subscribers today, Gurman says the smart display will have a square display and be somewhat smaller than expected.

The device will have a square display, I'm told, and be about the size of two iPhones side by side. The screen is positioned at an angle on a small base, making it reminiscent of the circular bottom of the iMac G3 from a couple of decades ago. It's possible that the base will include speakers, essentially turning the device into a HomePod with a screen.

The small size might help Apple keep the price down. The device is said to run a new operating system that features iPad-like apps, including FaceTime, Notes, and Calendar. Its primary purpose will be to serve as a hub to control your smart home accessories; however, it will also be able to run video and photo slideshows.

The Apple smart display is expected to launch next year. This will allegedly be the first of two Apple smart displays to hit the market. A higher-end device is said to feature a larger screen controlled by a robotic limb that enables enhanced videoconferencing, media playback, and smart home control. That device is expected to launch in 2026 and will likely cost around $1000.
