In a recent interview, Apple CEO Tim Cook reiterated the company's philosophy of prioritizing excellence over speed, stating that when it comes to AI, Apple aims to be 'not first, but best.'
Speaking with The Wall Street Journal's Ben Cohen at Caffè Macs this summer, Cook reflected on lessons from his time working with Steve Jobs, his early days as a paperboy, and his career at IBM. He also elaborated on Apple's 'not first, but best' approach to innovation...
"We're perfectly fine with not being first," he says. "As it turns out, it takes a while to get it really great. It takes a lot of iteration. It takes worrying about every detail. Sometimes, it takes a little longer to do that. We would rather come out with that kind of product and that kind of contribution to people versus running to get something out first. If we can do both, that's fantastic. But if we can only do one, there's no doubt around here. If you talk to 100 people, 100 of them would tell you: It's about being the best."
Internal estimates put Apple's artificial intelligence about two years behind the competition; however, the company is putting an enormous amount of resources into developing its technology and has partnered with OpenAI to bring cutting edge capabilities to users in the near future.
Notably, Apple just confirmed that iOS 18.1 will be released next week, bringing early Apple Intelligence features to users for the first time!
