Apple's redesigned Mac mini will feature five USB-C ports, but no USB-A ports, according to a new report from Mark Gurman.
As previously, rumored, Apple is expected to begin its transition to M4 chips for Mac this year. The first Macs to make the transition will likely be the MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini. Of these models, the Mac mini is said to feature the most significant redesign, it's first major overhaul since 2010!
I've received a lot of questions about the ports on the new Mac mini. In the past, Apple has removed connectors to simplify designs, irking customers in the process. So here's the good news: The M4 Pro version will have five USB-C ports (three on the back and two on the front like the Mac Studio). That model will also retain an Ethernet port, HDMI connector and headphone jack. But prepare to say goodbye to the USB-A ports found on the current Mac mini. And one has to wonder if those will survive the Mac Pro and Mac Studio upgrades next year.
Gurman also notes that the new Mac mini will feature an internal power supply, so an external brick won't be necessary.
Suppliers are allegedly scheduled to begin shipping Mac mini units with the base M4 chip to warehouses in early September. The higher-end version with an M4 Pro chip isn't set to begin shipping until October. Gurman suggests this means a launch about a month after the iPhone unveiling on September 9.
