Apple to Revamp Apple Watch SE With Plastic Casing [Gurman]

Apple is planning to revamp its low-cost Apple Watch SE with a plastic casing, according to a recent report from Mark Gurman.

Currently, the Apple Watch SE features an aluminum casing. If the company does switch to plastic, it would mark the first time Apple has used plastic for its smartwatch since the initial version debuted a decade ago. This move could help reduce costs. The aluminum case is estimated to cost around $5 per unit, while the plastic case is likely half that. Although the savings may not be substantial, it could contribute to a rumored price reduction from $249 to around $200.

Gurman also notes that the plastic model may allow Apple to introduce new colors that will appeal to kids and parents.

Another advantage of plastic: The material allows for bolder colors than aluminum and is probably more kid-friendly. It's no coincidence that Apple revamped its watch marketing several weeks ago to appeal to parents. With recent school phone bans, Apple has been touting its watch as a low-cost phone alternative that can help parents stay in touch with their children — and track their whereabouts.

If you're interested in a second generation Apple Watch SE, the current aluminum model is on sale today for $189. That's $60 off its list price of $249.
